Cultural and political research

This role requires you to answer the following questions:

  • What are some aspects of rural Zambian life that are relevant to our farmer's situation?
  • What is the role of the head of the village?
  • How can our farmer interact with the head of the village?
  • How will NGOs, local government affect our farmer's life?
  • Note: We don't need a detailed report of Zambia's political system or even who their Head of State is. Only things that our rural farmer will encounter.

Agriculture research and design

This role requires you to answer the following questions:

  • What crops can our farmer plant?
  • What are the costs of seeds?
  • What are the prices for the harvested crops?
  • What unit of measurement will we use to determine how much of a given crop the farmer can harvest?
  • For every unit of seed the farmer plants, how much land will the resulting crops occupy?
  • Note: We may be able to simplify units of measurement to reduce complexity at the cost of realism. The priority is to have some of way of knowing what we can plant, how much we can plant, how much we can harvest, and how much they will sell for.

Item research and design

This role requires you to answer the following questions :

  • What are the prices for the tools?
  • How much do medicines cost?
  • What are some items that our farmer can make by combining existing items (ex. flour + water + heat = bread)?
  • How much can items be sold and bought for?
  • What are the functions of some of these items?

Movember

Dear Joberts Families,

I am part of Team BPS for Movember, an annual fundraiser during the month of November to raise money for men's cancers. Please check out my page:

http://us.movember.com/mospace/1360586

Our students voted on the style of mustache for me, and, for the second year in a row, chose the "Trucker". This is a very exciting time of year, and the kids know that Movember is really about kindness, especially to strangers. One of our character education efforts for the month of November is kindness.

Thanks!
Mr. Joe

The Government Shutdown

With Congress having failed to pass a federal budget on Monday, some government services have stopped

external image 131001_shut_tout2.jpg
U.S. Park Service workers close the entrance to the Lincoln Monument, in Washington, D.C., on October 1. The monument is one of many federal government-run visitor areas now closed due to the government shutdown.

For the first time in 17 years, the U.S. government has shut down, following the failure on Monday of Congress to pass a federal funding bill. While essential services will continue, the shutdown will keep hundreds of thousands of federal workers off the job.
The federal government sets a budget that pays for agencies and services. Without a plan for how to spend money, the government has to shut down. But for a budget to pass, it has to be approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives. The deadline to pass a new budget was Monday night because the new budget year began on October 1.
Over the weekend, Congress worked on passing the budget. A federal funding bill went back and forth between the House and the Senate. A major sticking point was whether the government would pay for changes in health care. The Senate, which has a Democratic majority, wanted to pass a budget that would fund the new health care law created by President Barack Obama. But many members of the House, which has a Republican majority, did not want government money used that way.
Early Sunday, the House sent a bill to the Senate that would delay for one year the health insurance law, which says all Americans must buy health insurance or else pay a penalty. The House’s bill would have also repealed a new tax on medical devices meant to help fund the new law. The Senate met on Monday and rejected the bill, and sent it back to the House, which then offered a revised measure. That was rejected, as well. So what exactly will happen now that the government has been shut down? Watch this video and keep reading to find out.

Effects of the Shutdown
Although the government has shut down, its services that are most important in the short-term are still getting done. Soldiers and other members of the military who help protect America are still keeping us safe. The Post Office is still delivering letters. Air traffic controllers are still helping planes land safely at airports.
But many services have stopped. Sites that belong to the federal government, such as national parks and museums, are now closed. Government-funded medical research has been delayed. Additionally, the government is not issuing as many visas—documents that allow foreign people to visit our country—and passports, which enable Americans to visit other nations.
Many government workers, such as public school teachers, firefighters, and police officers, are paid by local governments or state governments. Even though the federal government has been shut down, their jobs should not be affected. Kids are still going to school, unless they’re part of a program like Head Start, which depends on grant money from Washington. Police officers are still protecting towns and firefighters are still putting out fires.
Essential federal workers, like the President and members of Congress, are still on the job. But many federal government employees—about 800,000 in all—will stay home, without pay, until a deal is reached.
The federal government has shut down many times before. In 1995, it was closed for 21 days. Lawmakers are expected to eventually come to a compromise that that will get the government running again.

Year-round school Article #2 (read below)

Year-round school would benefit kids, economy

Instead of starting school later, dispense with the long summer break and the brain drain in causes

August 27, 2013|By Elizabeth Heubeck The Baltimore Sun newspaper
The office of Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot recently released a report suggesting that Maryland students start school after Labor Day so that families can take one last summer-fling external image icon1.png, thereby giving the state a nearly $75 million economic boost. I haven't crunched any numbers on the topic but, as a parent with school-age children, I believe the report's glowing financial projections fail to take into account several factors that work against this predicted surge in tourism-related dollars. Here's why, as well as an alternate suggestion.
For starters, the average family's state of mind before Labor Day — one consumed with back-to-school preparations — contrasts sharply with a relaxed mindset conducive to kicking back on vacation. Parents are anxiously clutching external image icon1.png supply lists while trolling the aisles of office supply stores. They're ticking off other pre-school "to-dos": new shoes, backpacks, lunchbox, etc. They're trying to rein in carefree summer bedtimes so that their kids aren't zombies when they return to school.
Not to mention, many parents have spent plenty of time with their children during the summer and, quite frankly, they're looking forward to a respite from family time. For those parents who have not had the luxury to do so because of inflexible work schedules, they probably have to budget for child care during the long summer break and, therefore, may be hard-pressed to find the extra money required to take an additional vacation during the Labor Day weekend.
While I doubt that a slightly revised school schedule to accommodate an extra week or so at the end of the summer would do much to boost Maryland's tourism revenue, I do think that a different revision in the external image icon1.png schedule just might do the trick.
The idea is, at first glance, fairly drastic. It would make school year-round, with a greater number of shorter breaks throughout the 12-month period. A holiday such as Labor Day, if it occurred after a period when kids had been in school for several weeks or concluded the end of a four- or five-week summer break, would present a welcome opportunity for one last summer excursion before the weather turned cooler and kids returned to school. It might even bring the state the big surge in tourism dollars it's looking for.
Here's another way to look at it. While the state's tourism and education budgets may come from two separate sources, I'm assuming that all money made or saved in Maryland ultimately benefits the state. And, if that's the case, it's quite possible that the very real and calculable cost of brain drain that happens every summer as external image icon1.png get a whopping 12 consecutive weeks off for summer vacation — an entire quarter of the year — negates any extra dollars the state would accumulate in tourism dollars by pushing back the start date of school by a week or so.
Conversely, if teachers didn't have to spend the first several weeks of every school year reviewing with students what they forgot over the summer, classes could move forward more rapidly, introducing new material instead of going over old stuff. Maybe that would help the U.S. break out of its very mediocre external image icon1.png ranking of 17th among the world's developed countries. A better global education status would likely translate into a more prepared workforce of graduates — presumably, one that would help boost the economy.
In Maryland, we're fortunate to be within close proximity of mountains, the ocean and a lot of other great places in which to frolic (and spend money). A well-constructed educational and tourism plan just might encourage more in-state residents to enjoy these resources on Labor Day weekend, thereby increasing both tourism dollars and students' education.

A note from our 5th grade band teacher, Mrs. Eliassen:
5th GRADE BAND SECTIONALS
I would like to spend quality time with your child in order to give them the individual instruction needed to begin their instruments successfully. Our 45 minute class has 71 beginners learning 9 different instruments. If your child did not attend beginning camp this summer, I strongly hope you can arrange the time to attend. Students who attended camp may choose to attend as well. Please consider this offer.
Students are invited to participate in an instrument specific class designed to help them make a quality sound, use proper posture and a perfect embouchure. Sectionals will begin at 4:15 and run until 5:00. Car pools would be a generous way to support students who wish to participate in this opportunity.
